I think Heather liked making friends while handing out socks as much as people needed socks. You're already taking the first step by personalizing the issue and not ignoring it. Everyone has a unique gift and the best way to help others is to use that gift. One example is the school teacher who took the bag of socks for her kids to write notes. She also had her class knit scarfs which we handed out during the winter season. I know a mother and daughter team that baked cookies for the shelter. They didn't have money to give nor the time to commit. It was their unique way to help. Everyone likes homemade cookies *grin* My gift is telling stories, and being pushy! :-) The sad part is homelessness is everywhere and It is about to get worse. The good news is that near you there is a social services agency or a faith based organization that needs help. Some may be a fit, some will not. I guarantee after a little time of discovery the rewards of helping others is priceless.
